The French bond sell-off is the headline I'm watching this week.

The French bond sell-off is the headline I'm watching this week.

Let's say investors lose trust that a government can pay back what it has borrowed. They sell its bonds, and the worry can spread to other countries.

When people get nervous like that, money often moves towards the dollar and gold. The rand can feel it too, because investors tend to pull back from smaller currencies first. I can't tell you it will happen. It is simply what I'm watching.

Before the week starts, I read the COT report. It shows which way the big banks and funds are positioned in gold and the major currencies, and that tells me who is leaning where before I look at a single chart.
